Komodo Survival Program

Komodo Survival Program was established on 9 March 2007. This non profit institution has mission to protect, conserve, and manage the existence of the Komodo dragons by developing expertise and capacity to provide reliable knowledge on biology of this endangered species. Komodo Survival Indonesia is aimed to provide supports in order to reach the following objectives;

  1. To develop realiable scientific knowledge on biology, ecology, and conservation of Komodo dragon.
  2. To develop knowledge, expertise, personals, and resources to conduct scientific monitoring, conservation and management of Komodo dragon's population and it’s environment.
  3. To develop easy-accessed and reliable information of large scale aspects of Komodo dragon’s bio-ecology, conservation and management.
  4. To increase involvement of local communities in terms of protection of the environment.

To reach the aimed objectives, Komodo Survival Program is working to implement:

  1. Scientific research and monitoring on biology and ecology of Komodo dragon.
  2. Training and capacity building for Indonesian personals or institutions to conduct scientific research, monitoring, conservation, and management of Komodo dragon's population and it's environment.
  3. Provide and disseminate reliable and easy-accessed information related to the species, habitat, conservation, and management of Komodo dragon.
  4. Promoting sustainable development by local communities within and around wild habitat of Komodo dragon.

PROJECTS

Komodo Survival Program is working along with Komodo National Park and Wae Wuul Nature Reserve authorities to run the following projects:

  1. Research and monitoring on population ecology of Komodo dragon.
  2. Research and monitoring on nesting ecology of female Komodo dragon.
  3. Research and monitoring on prey ecology of Komodo dragon.
  4. Research and monitoring on other endangered species, i.e Yellow-crested Cockatoo, Birds of prey.
  5. Support collaborative protection activities.
  6. Support local communities to increase their involvement in protecting the habitat of Komodo dragons.

Komodo Survival Indonesia and it's projects are managed by ex staff of Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Species, the Zoological Society of San Diego (CRES / ZSSD) Komodo Project. The previous project was conducted in the Komodo National Park since 2002-2006, and it's achievement can be read at publication section of this website.
